Isaiah 66:1-2 “Thus says the LORD: "Heaven is My throne, And earth is My footstool. Where is the house that you will build Me? And where is the place of My rest? 2 For all those things My hand has made, And all those things exist," Says the LORD. "But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, And who trembles at My word.”
Isaiah was a prophet to God's people during a time when God's presence was encountered in places made by man. (The Tabernacle – Exodus 25, and then the Temple 1 Kings 6) Here, we have an enormously significant revelation about what is truly important to God. There is nothing that is more precious to God than the heart of a believer. God does not desire the ornate and extravagantly designed places of worship, nor does He want shrines or monuments constructed of precious materials. After all, EVERYTHING belongs to God – and so do we, for that matter. So if everything (including us!) belongs to God, why would our hearts hold anymore value in Gods eyes than anything else He has created? The answer to that question is in how we were made.
Of all that God created, we are the only ones shown in scripture to be made in the likeness of God. (Gen 1:27) By virtue of our creation, God has given us the choice of what to set our hearts upon. Those who set their hearts on the things of this world and the pursuit of their own desires cannot please God; even if they try to make those worldly things or those selfish desires about God. But when we humble ourselves, recognizing our own brokenness and decide to reverence God and His desire for us, we offer to Him that which He values above all other things – the possession of our hearts.
John 14:23 “Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.”
